Apture has created a technology that aims to make web pages more evenly in three dimensions: the third dimension into the boxes that pop-ups to show multimedia readers assets related to the article. The Editors Weblog spoke with the co-founder and CEO of Apture Tristan Harris on how to work and how it can help publishers. Harris describes what inspired him to start work on Apture. He and co-founder came up with the idea while studying at Stanford, during a conversation with Knight Fellows. |

Easy access to multiple multimedia sources apture edit.pngApture media has created a search engine that allows authors to "quickly take advantage of all media available on the web, in various API and digital libraries," Harris explains. Journalist highlights keywords in the text, such as names of people, places, events, or a particular topic, and a box will appear with a list of media assets that may be to be connected. This includes reference tools like Wikipedia, IMDB, Amazon, and even the U.S. Congress, photos from Flickr or Yahoo, a video from YouTube or Daily Motion, maps from Google Maps, documents from Scribd, and journalists can choose what they consider apppropriate assets - perhaps more than one - and establish a link. |

When readers click on a hyperlink, instead of opening in different browser window, appears another small box to display the pieces of articles, videos, photos or maps that the reader can consult without losing their position in the original article. And as a journalist Apture allows to cut certain parts of a video or a link to a particular passage in a book, the box is expected to offer them only the most relevant information. Readers can click on to the original site by clicking a link in the box. For each publisher, their own assets and archives can be incorporated into the search engine. Apture also been developed to handle multiple clients Apture so that each user can access the archives: Reuters eg video, or piece of the New York Times, Washington Post, BBC, or article. Apture just added the Google Books and NPR's audio podcasts to the list of assets. |
